Mission Statement

The Fishing School’s (TFS) mission is to provide a safe haven and academic support to underserved youth and their families in Washington, D.C. The Fishing School’s name was the vision of our founder, Tom Lewis, and comes from the adage, "If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will feed himself for a lifetime." By teaching young people to "fish in the rivers of their minds," TFS is changing generations

Description

The Fishing School (TFS) is a nationally-recognized youth development organization. We provide children and families with academic and parental support through our community-based centers in Washington, DC.

Since 1990, TFS has served more than 2,500 youth and their families. Today, under the leadership of Executive Director Leo Givs, TFS provides youth with academic supports and a safe haven during the most vulnerable hours of the day to help them to fish in the rivers of the mind.
