AseraCare Hospice

Pets can be very helpful in providing company for the residents. Volunteers who specialize in sharing their trained pet with persons who are ill or lonely are wanted. Volunteers function as companion volunteers with the specialty focus on encouraging and enhancing patient interactions with their certified pet. There may be only one visit, but often additional or on-going pet companion visits are requested.

Pet must be certified for visits by a certified Pet Therapy Program, comparable to those listed on the American Kennel Club's website. AseraCare agencies located in communities lacking a pet therapy certification group should have the pet, at minimum, pass obedience training and will have their first visit supervised by AseraCare staff.

Pet must have current rabies vaccination and Volunteer is responsible to keep this documentation current in the Volunteer's personnel file in the Volunteer Office records. Volunteer Coordinator will conduct 2-3 supervisory visits with volunteer and pet before they make unsupervised visits.

Mission Statement

AseraCare Hospice serves to focus our available resources to meet the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of our patients and families with a sense of compassion and dignity. We express this through ongoing gentle acts of kindness and sympathy. We preserve the dignity of death for our patients and families by making pain management, comfort and quality of life our primary goals. AseraCare Hospice believes that through compassionate support and the promotion of a caring environment, patients and families may be able to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.

Description

Our volunteers commit to enhancing our patients' and families quality of life by providing various services. We strive to help our patients remain as independent as possible for as long as possible, in familiar surroundings. Volunteers are integral to the hospice team. Volunteers provide both direct and indirect services. We encourage use of time and talent to enhance patient, family and volunteers' lives. Training and orientation is offered to all incoming volunteers at various levels.

If you are a surviving family member, we encourage you to wait a minimum of one year following the patient's death to serve as a direct care volunteer or in public relations activities.
