Hospitality Training mentors are an integral part of the month-long hospitality training program run by JVS' Refugee Services Program.

Schedule: February 21 - March 16th, 2023. Mondays and Tuesdays from 10am-1pm. Volunteers are respectfully requested to volunteer one shift (one class) a week.

Program/Department Overview:

JVS Refugee Services has provided direct employment services to local refugee and immigrant populations for over 40 years. These services are offered to refugees, political asylees, Cuban and Haitian entrants, certified victims of human trafficking, and other work-authorized immigrants. Services include job search assistance, resume and interview preparation, cultural orientation, pre-employment vocational English language classes, job placement and follow-up, and post-employment support. Over 80% of our participants are hired per year and our 90% job retention rate is higher than similar job placement agencies in Boston. To achieve these outcomes, JVS partners with over 1,400 employers in hospitality, retail, agriculture, education, health care, sales, manufacturing, and business; and supports participants in finding and maintaining gainful employment that can lead to successful careers.

Hospitality Training Overview:
JVS' Hospitality Training Program will immigrants gain the skills needed to launch their careers. Our graduates are prepared to work in housekeeping and other positions. This 4-week training program is free for participants. Our previous hotel partners include: Courtyard by Marriott, Hosteling International, Homewood Suites by Hilton, and the Westin.

Responsibilities:

Volunteers play a key role in giving many of these participants their first certificate, work experience and/or training in the U.S. which can help them to find their first job. Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Primary function is to assist with Vocational Training Program classes, which includes discussions and activities. The mission of each class is to help participants build professional skills within the hospitality sector.
  • Works with clients to develop resumes and practice interview skills.
  • Attends class and supports the Instructor in leading the training program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
