Healthy Cooking
Youth at multiple recreation centers learn safe cooking & food preparation techniques, as well as how to create an affordable, healthy recipe.

Looking for individuals with a passion for and/or background in nutrition, culinary arts, or health who enjoy working with young people from diverse backgrounds and possess qualities of patience, open-mindedness and flexibility. Instructors lead our after-school 4-H programs at recreation centers throughout Metro Denver. Each week, the hour long Healthy Cooking classes involve safe food preparation skills, encourage cooperation through group work, and build stronger decision-making skills related to health. Each class provides nutrition education and provides the opportunity to make tasty, affordable, easy recipes featuring nutritious foods highlighted in the lesson. We have ten different recreation centers offering our programs; volunteers are able to pick the one that works best with their location.

About CSU Extension Denver 4-H Youth Programs

Location:

888 E. Iliff Ave, Denver, CO 80210, US

Mission Statement

The Mission of Extension is to provide information and education, and encourage the application of research-based knowledge in response to local, state, and national issues affecting individuals, youth, families, agricultural enterprises, and communities of Colorado. 4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. 4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults.

Description

4-H began a century ago as an educational program for the nation's rural youth. Today, 4-H meets the needs of and engages young people in positive youth development experiences. These experiences are based on the idea that young people should be regarded as resources to be developed. 2010 marked the state centennial of 4-H in Colorado and a renewed commitment to helping shape youth and communities. In looking to the next century, 4-H further develops its programs and continues its motto of "Making the Best Better."

Tech Wizards is a national youth mentoring program providing instruction in emerging technologies, with the goals of increasing life skills such as youth social competency, family relationships and academic success and workforce readiness. CSU Denver Extension 4-H houses Tech Wizards in the Denver area to provide community-based Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STREAM) education programs with a mentoring aspect to serve at-risk youth. The program relies on mentors who lead classes, engaging youth interest in science and emerging technologies to encourage them to apply learning to their STREAM academic instruction and future goals.
