Welcoming and inviting

This pandemic has driven many people to need our food pantry! Come make a difference with an energetic team who wants to make a difference! St. John Lutheran Church Food Pantry relies on volunteers for our Saturday drive-through food distribution. After being contacted and scheduled by our volunteer coordinator, volunteers arrive between 7:00-7:30 a.m., depending upon the volunteer duty they are assigned, and are finished when all the food has been given out, typically by 11:00 a.m. Volunteers need to be between 18-59 years old, should not have any immune-compromising health conditions, and should not work or live with any person with any immune-compromising health conditions.

Volunteer duties may include directing traffic in the parking lot, lifting heavy boxes into trunks, taking registration, pushing carts, moving pallets with a pallet jack, packing food into bags, attending to the restroom. We require facemasks and gloves to be worn (they are provided if you do not have your own) and we encourage social distancing of 6' between people.

Since we made adjustments to our regular food pantry operations in March due to COVID-19, we have been serving 300 households weekly. We would appreciate your help to serve our hungry neighbors during this extremely difficult time.

To join us, visit stjohnfood.org, click the "Volunteer" tab to complete our simple online application. Our volunteer coordinator will contact you soon! We look forward to welcoming you to our team!

Mission Statement

St. John Lutheran Church Food Pantry's mission is to serve the hungry in our community. We believe that serving clients with dignity and grace is just as important as the food we give.

Description

We are a partner agency of the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) and a contracted State of Illinois Emergency Food Pantry (EFP).

Our pantry is 100% volunteer run and serves approximately 800 families each month, which amounts to 2,700-3,000 individual family members.

We serve all who are hungry and do not exclude based on a client's zip code, county, or school district. Clients may visit our pantry once every twenty-one days.

Community volunteers unload weekly food deliveries on Wednesdays and then distribute it on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Donations make it possible for us to purchase food from Northern Illinois Food Bank.

We have established partnerships with the Jewel-Osco on Route 59 and Caton Farm Road in Plainfield, IL and across the street at Fresh Thyme in Joliet, and rely on our volunteers to pick up these food donations on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

We are run 100% by donations and gifts. Visit stjohnfood.org to learn more about us.
