Reading Empowers was formed with the mission of improving literacy among young children. Our goal is to instill an interest in reading, at a young age, with the hope that this will develop into a lifelong love and passion.
This upcoming school semester (Fall 2019), we will be hosting Saturday morning reading sessions at P.S. 1 and P.S. 124, both in Lower Manhattan. These sessions are twice a month, generally, every other Saturday from 10:00AM - 12:30PM.
Each session is about two hours. Volunteers and students are broken up into groups, with each group consisting of 2-3 volunteers and 6-10 students. The sessions consist of reading, writing, and an arts and crafts activity with the students. Lesson plans are developed in advanced and provided to volunteers.
We are looking for volunteers to join us on our mission! We will be reading to students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade.
P.S. 1 and P.S. 124 are both located in Chinatown at 8 Henry Street and 40 Division Street, respectively, in LES Manhattan.
Our program will begin early October 2019 and end April 2020.
