Choose the "volunteer with us" option to get detailed information about all our various volunteer opportunities. We have expanded our hours and services in response to Covid-19 and it implications our community and we need more volunteers! We have a variety of volunteer tasks to choose from, each shift typically lasting 3 hours. We are a fun, fast paced place to volunteer while making a tangible impact in the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors.

*Must pass background check and have a valid driver's license*

*Must be able to lift and carry about 30lbs.*

University District Food Bank needs a few volunteers who are consistently free for a couple hours on Wednesdays (between around 11:30am and 2pm) and has ample car room. We currently have a dozen drivers who help deliver about 180 total boxes of food to homebound individuals.

We need more drivers as we have had more people sign up for home delivery.

On an average day, boxes of food would be loaded into your car, where then you would go and take them to the individuals on your list. Because of limited parking, one person may stay in the car while a second person delivers the food and gets a signature from the client.

We deliver to zip codes 98102, 98103, 98105, 98112, 98115, and 98125. We try and keep the people on each route fairly close together, but we do have some outliers. We need people who are non judgmental, courteous, and flexible.

We are asking for at least a 3-month commitment after you try out this role for a few weeks. Thank you!

Mission Statement

The University District Food Bank's mission is to build a hunger-free Northeast Seattle by providing our neighbors with reliable access to healthy food and life-changing resources.

Description

Every week about 1300 families receive groceries from the University District Food Bank. Our clients include working adults, infants, children, underemployed, unemployed, seniors, disabled people, and the homeless. With the help of over 150 volunteers, giving over 250 hours a week, we distribute about 3 million pounds of food to families in Northeast Seattle.

History:
On May 4 th 1983, University District Food Bank opened its doors for the first time. A donated home refrigerator provided enough storage space for the perishable items we had on-hand. Our first year’s budget allowed $100 per month to purchase food to supplement what was donated. We served approximately 200 bags of groceries per week. By 1984, this number doubled, and in 1986, we were the 5 th busiest food bank in Seattle. Currently, we are the 3 rd or 4 th busiest food bank in the city from the perspective of total household visits each month.
