Surmang Foundation is recruiting physiciansfor

10 one-month volunteer residential rotations

in Tibet, in Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province,China. These positions will train township providers in essential skills related to:

• obstetrics and gynecology
• history taking and physical exam
• pediatrics
• emergency medicine
• trauma 028

Location of rotation: one of 5 clinics in Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province (includes the Surmang Dharma Sagara Clinic), East Tibet.028China.

Length of rotation: one month 028

Background: 028Surmang Foundation’s Dharma Sagara Clinic has been in operation in Yushu Prefecture for over 21 years.

The region is a 97% ethnic Tibetan region and one of the most traditional Tibetan regions in the world. Most people are nomadic, farming or monastic. It is part of the ultra-poor region of China, a low-population density area, that is home to over 40 million people who earn less than US 15¢/day. 028

Surmang has succeeded via primary care and through a network of 40 Community Health Workers in reducing one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates (3,000/100000 live births) to zero. It’s free quality care services have resulted in over 1200 patient visits/month over the last 10 years. 028It is one of a few international foundations operating in an ethnic Tibetan region in China. 028After the April 2010 Yushu earthquake, Surmang partnered with the Chinese Government to provide training and other support services to 4 township clinics. The purpose of this partnership is to increase provider capacity and create a more user-friendly public health user interface.

We are building 5 birthing centers and we want to focus on physician professional development in the use of these centers.

Surmang has had over 130 volunteers in the past 21 years, including doctors, public health professionals, and others. 028

Successful volunteers must have:

• good health -region is over 4000 m.
• outgoing
• adaptable and open-minded
• be willing to commit to a 4 week rotation
• hearty 028

Surmang will provide logistical support, coordination and ground transport.
