YALLA San Diego is a non-profit located in El Cajon, CA that uses soccer and academic programs to motivate refugee youth to transcend the social and economic barriers that inhibit their success. Through after-school tutoring programs, YALLA helps these children whose families have fled war improve their grades, learn English, and eventually achieve a college education.

YALLA currently seeks qualified individuals to act as tutors to help our K-8 and high-school level students complete homework in various subjects, but to also teach English, science, and math through our adaptive curriculum which we design for our students to augment their understanding of subject matter. Volunteers will work one-on-one with students to help them through lessons as well as homework, under the supervision of our Academy staff. Successful completion of background check and one mandatory training session required.

Interested volunteers can apply online at www.yallasd.org by clicking on the "Get Involved" tab.

Mission Statement

YALLA is the first and only comprehensive program in California that uses soccer to motivate child survivors of war and immigrant youth to help rebuild their lives through our education, leadership, and eco-therapy programs.

Description

Youth and Leaders Living Actively was established in January 2010 in San Diego, the largest resettlement city in the United States to work with immigrant youth and child survivors of war. With soccer as the hook and college as the goal, local San Diegan youth enroll in our soccer, education, and ecotherapy programs. We serve an average of 250-300 kids a year, and they receive 10-15 hours of program activities each week, making it their primary after-school care. Using soccer as incentive, YALLA requires its scholar-athletes to adhere to both its rigorous academic tutoring and to receive treatment through its eco-therapy program. YALLA's personal and intensive approach helps each child, most of whom suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and have either lost family members or have been orphaned by war.

We are based in the City of El Cajon, where most of our programs are held.
