TherapyWorks NW is a pediatric therapy clinic specializing in Physical, Occupational, Speech, and Hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is equine assisted therapy in which our patients have 20 minute (sometimes shorter) sessions where they are engaging in activities while riding horseback.
Hippotherapy at our clinic is kids doing therapy while on horseback, and we always need volunteer assistants to help with that. In Hippotherapy, we have a special needs child on the horse, a person handling the horse, a therapist and a side walker assistant who moves along beside the horse and rider. These sidewalkers play games with the children and serve as safety personnel as needed. The sidewalker also help with horse care and barn chores.
An interested volunteer should be comfortable around horses and experience being around horses is best. The volunteer needs to be able to walk for extended periods of time and be strong enough to lift 30-50 lbs momentarily (not repeated lifting, only for emergency dismounts). We have found that longer term volunteers work best in our program so that the kids and the horses have some consistency. We also require sidewalkers to be at least 17 years of age.
Please contact us and come on out to see what it is all about. It is a fun volunteer job. We look forward to meeting you!
