UCSD English-in-Action Program
The UCSD International Students & Programs Office’s(ISPO) English-in-Action (EIA) Conversation Program is looking for volunteer community members and university students who will enjoy meeting with an international student, scholar or spouse for 1-2 hours on a weekly basis to assist them in improving their English conversation skills and to share our American culture.
Participating in EIA is very rewarding, as it provides considerable cultural insight and a deeper appreciation for diversity which helps students gain a greater respect and appreciation for other cultures.
No knowledge of foreign languages or teaching experience is required. EIA volunteers attend an orientation session at the ISPO office and materials and resources are provided to all volunteers.
Volunteer conversation leaders can work with participants individually or in small groups and typically meet for 1-2 hours/week at a location that is convenient for both.(on or off campus) Currently, meetings are being held remotely using the app that you and the international visitor feel most comfortable with. (zoom, skype, facetime, google duo, etc.)
Please visit http://bit.ly/EIATutorExperiences to hear what current and past volunteers have shared about their experiences with EIA.

About the program
The Global Education's English-in-Action (EIA) conversation program matches international students, scholars and spouses with volunteer conversation leaders to help our international visitors with conversational English language skills, simultaneously helping them to acquire a better understanding of American culture and to acclimate more quickly to their new environment. Our volunteers are community members, faculty, staff, and students.
Conversation partners usually meet for 1.5 to 2 hours per week at a time and location that is convenient for both.
The EIA program is a rewarding learning experience for the international guest and volunteer, as they both gain considerable cultural insight and a deeper understanding and appreciation for diversity.
We'll work with your schedule.
