Tax season is a time of stress for everyone. But, it can be especially hard on low income people. They benefit most from receiving the refund they are entitled to, but may not be able to afford a professional tax preparer. That’s where we come in!
EMERGE is seeking volunteers to prepare basic, current year state and federal tax returns for low-and moderate-income individuals and families in North Minneapolis. Volunteers will work one-on-one with EMERGE clients to help them access important tax benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit.
COMMITMENT AND TIMELINE:
November - December 2016: Attend a volunteer orientation
December 2016 - January 2017: Complete approximately 15 hours of training, includes: state and federal tax guidelines, software training, and EMERGE policies and procedures.
*Practice labs also available.
January 2017: Successfully complete open book IRS certification tests
January 28 - April 15 2017: Volunteer Saturday mornings, 9am - 1pm, preparing tax returns at the EMERGE Career and Technology Center
(Volunteers may take two Saturdays off between late February and the end of March)
This is a great way to give back to the community while gaining excellent training and experience that you can take with you long after the volunteer position is over!
