A SPECIAL program that we need adult volunteer(s) to lead is our GLOBAL TEENS PROGRAM, a national YMCA program. Our Global Teens have a goal of going to Africa in 2017 (Zambia & Botswana) on a service learning project working with Y-affiliated schools and orphanages. Our Global Teens have penpals in Zambia, and have identified hunger/poverty, environmental issues and education as areas they want to focus on in service learning both in Los Alamos and abroad. They are planning fundraising projects/events to help raise funds for the big trip. They've already secured a $5K donation and a $5K match/challenge donation (from Lou Santoro State Farm Insurance) and have many chaperones interested as well. We just need a caring adult(s) help connect kids with another country in the spirit of service learning.
Additionally, the Los Alamos Teen Center is looking for adults who want to share their skills and knowledge with teens 9-12 grades. We have a brand new, large, fabulous space and we're seeing large number of kids daily. We need tutors, some to lead a SAT/ACT prep session, teaching or leading guitar-playing and other music, drumming, music and video production, photography, yoga, dance, etc. We have equipment and boy do we have GREAT kids! We just need caring adults to engage with them.
