Last year AIC volunteers prepared over 4,500 returns and refunded nearly $4.3 million back to families in Mid-Michigan!
You do not need any experience with taxes or accounting to volunteer as a tax preparer. AIC will provide training and certification through the IRS for FREE. We offer in person training sessions and online as well and will be starting orientation soon.
Tax preparation-Tax Preparers must pass the certification test on required tax law to be certified at Basic (easy), Advanced (complex), and Specialty Certification levels. We recommend all new volunteers to certify to the basic level. Tax Preparers conduct proper intake interviews to clarify the financial situation of clients and ensure all allowable credits are claimed when preparing a return. Tax Preparers are encouraged to contact the Site Coordinator or a Quality Reviewer for assistance if needed. Once a Tax Preparer has completed all fields required for the tax return they forward the document to a Quality Reviewer to assure all documents and information is correct before submission.
Please if you would like to volunteer do not hesitate to contact us!

About Asset Independence Coalition
Location:

Mission Statement
The Mission of Asset Independence Coalition (AIC) is to coordinate resources of public and private institutions to promote the financial independence of low to moderate income residents of Clinton, Eaton and Ingham Counties.
Description
AIC delivers free income tax preparation to households below $49,000 in income. We also connect low to moderate income households with free financial education opportunities, and other free services, and connect "unbanked" individuals to second-chance banking products. We look to create financial stability over the long-term for our clients.
AIC is co-chaired by Ingham County Treasurer, Eric Schertzing and Lansing City Treasurer, Antonia Kraus.
We have over 25 free tax prep sites, open from February 1 to April 15. All tax prep volunteers are trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service. Our volunteers are trained to find all refundable credits a taxpayer may be eligible for, in order to minimize their tax burden and/or maximize their refund.
