Project READ-Redwood City Friends of Literacy

Adult Pair

BE THE DIFFERENCE in the life of an adult or child. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one for just a few hours a week, helping learners attain their personal educational goals. Tutors work with learners in a relaxed and supportive environment, providing a source of inspiration and hope, and instill a lifelong love of learning. Tutoring sessions are individualized, and designed to meet the needs of learners to improve their literacy skills and to achieve their goals. Volunteer opportunities can be in-person or remote.

Adult Tutors: Project READ offers tutor training for new community volunteers six times a year.

Teen Tutors: Project READ offers teen tutor trainings on a monthly basis. If you are interested in tutoring or volunteering with Project READ, please contact us or stop by; rclread@rewoodcity.org (650) 780-7077.

Mission Statement

Project READ fuels the fire of hope through literacy. We believe literacy is not only a human right, but also a necessity -- a gift of opportunity and hope for the future.

Our innovative intergenerational programs bring literacy to the adults, youth and families in our community. Our programs are designed to break the cycle of illiteracy by surrounding families with literacy services that promote education and a lifelong love of learning.

Description

Make The Difference: Become a Literacy Tutor

Project READ’s adult and youth programs are committed to the literacy needs of our community, focusing on unincorporated Redwood City, the North Fair Oaks area and Redwood City’s most underserved neighborhoods and schools. One in five adults in Redwood City reads below an 8 th grade level and more than 38% of school-aged children fail to complete the 12 th grade. Within the North Fair Oaks area, where the majority of our children, teens and families live, there are few options available for after-school activities in safe and supportive educational environments.
