Come and spend time with the wonderful community of Meadowbrook, while sharing your expansive tech knowledge! Meadowbrook is a LIHI operated property that houses families transitioning out of homelessness. Recently, Meadowbrook received a grant to expand, renovate and upgrade their community room! As a Meadowbrook Technology Engagement Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to use your tech knowledge to acquaint the community to Microsoft software, programs and equipment. These new features include 5 brand new, touch screen PCs equipped with Windows 8 software, and a new Xbox! This enriching experience will take place on Mondays between 3-6pm. You are more than welcome to work a 1.5 hour shift or the full 3 hours. The community of Meadowbrook will benefit more from a volunteer that is willing to maintain a consistent schedule!!

Volunteers should have good working knowledge of Microsoft programs, navigating the internet, email and general computer skills. Verbal skills and interpersonal communication skills are also necessary. Experience or knowledge on working with low-income and/or formerly homeless populations is preferred but not required. A background check is required for this position, but criminal history will not necessarily bar you from participating.

About Low Income Housing Institute

Location:

2407 First Ave,, Seattle, WA 98121, US

Mission Statement

The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.

Description

LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.

LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.

We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
