The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
Many of our community's seniors strive to remain independent despite many challenges. Every weekday, about 1,300 warm, nutritious meals are delivered to seniors who are over 60 years of age and unable to purchase or prepare food for themselves. The two most critical needs we have for volunteers are: 1) Drivers: Drivers commit 2 hours one day each week to drive a route and deliver warm meals to homebound seniors. Drivers are a friendly face and important point of contact for our seniors. Drivers use their own vehicles and receive an orientation and hands on training before they begin their route. 2) Kitchen: Kitchen volunteers help package meals for delivery under the supervision of our kitchen manager. San Leandro Meals on Wheels packages over 6,000 meals each week for our local homebound seniors.
