With guidance and training from our inspiring MRNY staff, ESL Coaches will work together to facilitate students' use of websites, software programs, and computer applications geared toward ESOL skill development. Additionally, coaches will provide individual tutoring and on occasion, run fun group activities to help enhance the students' learning.

Bilingual (Spanish/English) prefered but not required. Comprehension of the Spanish language will help. The opportunity is offered in three of our community centers.

Cycle information and time commitment:

A typical shift will run 3 hours. We run three to four (3-4) month class cycles throughout the year and we ask volunteers to commit to at least one class cycle. Inquire with the coordinator for exact shift dates and times.

Requirements:

Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. It is most important to us that participants have a strong desire to support and work with the immigrant community.

  • Training is provided and required.
  • Great teamwork, communication skills, and an enthusiastic commitment to supporting immigrants students.
  • Bilingual volunteers (Spanish/ English) are preferred but not required.
  • Comfortable leading a group of adult learners - previous tutoring or mentoring experience a plus.
  • Interest in adult education.
  • Some knowledge of Computers - tech savvy

Description

Make the Road New York forges alliances between New York communities that face shared hardships and injustices. All of the communities in which we work are predominantly populated by poor and working class Latinos, immigrants and African Americans. MRNY ' s 10,000+ members come from over 25 different countries and have a wide range of experiences and backgrounds.

MRNY has centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn ; Jackson Heights, Queens ; Port Richmond, Staten Island ; and Brentwood, Long Island , a nd our membership also draws from the surrounding neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York, Ridgewood, Woodside, Elmhurst, Corona, Central Islip, and Patchogue. Our advocacy and litigation work affect millions of other low-income and immigrant New Yorkers on the citywide level and increasingly at the state level.
