A Volunteer ESL Teacher Helps her Students

Purpose of Position:

  • Volunteers in our English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms assist adult learners in acquiring the English language and life-skills necessary to overcome the obstacles in their everyday lives.

Position Type: Unpaid volunteer service or internship

Schedule: Monday-Friday 10:00am-12:30pm or Monday-Thursday 6:00pm-8:30pm.

  • Volunteers commit to teaching one daytime or evening class per week, for the entire term.
  • Interns commit to teach 2-4 daytime or evening classes per week, for the entire term.

Responsibilities:

  • Use the CLUES curriculum and other resources provided to prepare engaging lesson plans for each class.
  • Teach or co-teach at least one class day or evening per week for the duration of the term.
  • Keep in constant communication with the program coordinator.
  • Communicate any concerns related to learners’ progress or classroom behavior in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and log a lesson report on the CLUES Volunteer Website for each class.

CLUES reserves the right to terminate an internship or volunteer commitment if behavior is not in compliance with CLUES policies.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills in English.
  • Ability to teach the English language and basic life-skills to adult learners.
  • Previous teaching and/or tutoring experience is preferred but not required.
  • Be responsible, punctual, encouraging, flexible and friendly when working with your students and CLUES staff.
  • Be open and respectful to diverse life experiences, values and backgrounds.

Requirements & Training:

  • Submit an application and attend an initial interview with CLUES Education Staff
  • Attend the CLUES New Volunteer Orientation Training
  • Observe a minimum of one Adult ESL Class prior to teaching
  • Optional: Attend the Minnesota Literacy Council’s Pre-Service Tutor Training

A criminal background check and/or driving record check may be required. CLUES reserves the right to conduct background checks.

CLUES is Minnesota’s largest Latino-led nonprofit organization, founded in 1981. Today it serves over 10,000 Latinos, immigrants, and neighborhood-based clients throughout the Twin Cities area. With offices in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, its current mission is to "Improve the quality of life of Latinos in Minnesota". CLUES’ family-centric model of delivery focuses on empowering clients to live healthy lives and become economically self-sufficient.
