The Volunteer Ombudsman provides to protect the human and civil rights of State Licensed Long Term Care residents though Advocacy, Investigation and Mediation. It requires confidentiality, the ability to listen and the ability to work effectively with both the resident, family members, care givers and facility management.
The Ombudsman Volunteer will obtain the same background application, training, testing and certification as a staff Ombudsman and works under the direction of either the area staff Ombudsman or the Regional Ombudsman. The minimum requirement for training is 20 hours, plus a testing process. There is also a continual training requirement and minimum volunteer hours (8 hours a month). Volunteer Ombudsman need to be able to have some computer communication skills to receive e-mails and to submit required reports. In addition the volunteer must also have reliable transportation.
Volunteer Ombudsman can either be assigned a State licensed assisted living or skilled nursing facility. Volunteers also assist in the agency's conference.
This is a very meaningful volunteer opportunity that provides both a sense of accomplishment and knowledge of senior resources.

The Mission of Northern Arizona Council of Governments (NACOG) Area Agency on Aging Region III is to provide the tools necessary to maximize independence and dignity and to implement a comprehensive coordinated system of services and resources. NACOG Area Agency on Aging will holistically support adults, families, and caregivers through assessment, planning, advocacy, information, referral, counseling and community networking.
Services are funded by the Older Americans Act, SSBG funds and the State of Arizona. Funding is allocated on a regional basis from the Arizona Department of Economic Security, Division of Aging and Adult (DAAS) to Area Agencies on Aging.
Eligibility for programs: Seniors or adults with disabilities.
The agency serves as a public advocate for the development and enhancement of coordinated community and comprehensive based systems of service. The agency monitors evaluates, and, where appropriate, comments on all policies, programs, hearings, levies and community actions that affect older persons.
Programs available: Care Coordination, Congregate Meals, Family Caregiver Program, Home & Community Based Services, Home Delivered Meals, Health and Wellness, Information and Referral, Senior Community Service Employment Program, Medicare/Benefits Counseling Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, Transportation and volunteer opportunities.
