Volunteer at the Mark Twain, Ascot, or Watts Branch Libraries - all located 5 or 10 minutes away from the 110 S freeway. These libraries serve the diverse patrons in the Compton, South Gate, and Florence-Graham areas, where there is a great need for help with reading, writing and speaking English. Students in our program are both native-born and foreign-born patrons. We interview and assess all potential tutors and students to match pairs who will fit each others' learning styles and schedules. No prior experience is necessary--just a willingness to help. All volunteers are interviewed and receive free online training and teaching materials.

Mission Statement
The Los Angeles Public Library provides free and easy access to information, ideas, books and technology that enrich, educate and empower every individual in our city's diverse communities.
Description
The Los Angeles Public Library is largest public research institution west of the Mississippi.
With more than 70 branch libraries and Central Library subject departments serving millions of Angelenos on a yearly basis, our programs are supported by thousands of volunteers in a variety of capacities. Whether providing one on one literacy tutoring, cutting out craft supplies for story time activities, helping serve summer lunch at the library, or serving as a Friend of the Library, all volunteers play a role in the work of LAPL.
If you would like to volunteer, but don't see a listing that matches your interests, please contact your local branch or the Volunteer Engagement Office. Opportunities and needs vary by location and fluctuate throughout the year.
Please note that the minimum age for volunteers is 14 (with the exception of 11-13-year-olds joining Teen Councils), minimum time commitments are required for most opportunities, adult volunteers working with children will be fingerprinted, and LAPL does not accept court-mandated community service.
