Working in partnership with the local community, GDR teams set up a clinic in the Guatemalan Highlands of San Martín Jilotepeque to serve the indigenous Maya community. Volunteers experience a true immersion experience while in San Martín - days are spent eating local foods, exploring the market while walking to the clinic each morning, and seeing firsthand true Maya culture. Volunteers work for one week and then have two days of sightseeing in the beautiful ancient capital of Antigua.
Project Cost: $1,780 (based on double occupancy)
Clinic-Only: $1,450 (based on double occupancy)
Call our office for single-occupancy rates.
The project duration is 10 days, which includes: travel time to Guatemala, orientation, walking tour of Antigua, five days working in the dental clinic and a weekend in Antigua for sightseeing.
Volunteers may opt out of the sightseeing portion of the project and head home after the clinic.

Mission Statement
At Global Dental Relief, our mission is to bring free dental care and oral health education to children around the globe, in Nepal, India, Guatemala, Mexico, Kenya, Cambodia and the US. Teams of volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants and general volunteers deliver treatment and preventive care in dental clinics that serve children in schools and remote villages. Global Dental Relief programs extend this reach by delivering toothbrushes and oral health education in schools between clinics and by providing critical nutrition to children in high-need situations.
Description
Global Dental Relief Model of Care
GDR provides preventive care and oral health education to children with little or no access to a dentist. In partnership with local organizations, field clinics are set up at schools and municipal facilities, with the exception of Kenya, where clinics are held in a local medical center.
In these clinics, children receive an exam, and are given any needed treatment including restorations, extractions, sealants, and a cleaning. In addition, GDR gives each child a fluoride treatment, and new toothbrush, and 3 points of oral health instruction throughout the visit. Care is provided primarily to restore permanent teeth and children are recalled every two years to ensure long term health.
