The Respite Volunteer position is a unique service opportunity for people who want to offer a supportive presence to adults transitioning out of homelessness. Volunteering takes place at House of Healing, a transitional housing program located on Beacon Hill. Residents come to the house at a time of profound vulnerability, often in the midst of ongoing recovery from a mental health crisis or substance abuse. They make a home alongside residential staff, bringing their own unique humanity to the cultivation of mutually-enriching relationships. Together, they pursue collective and personal healing by sharing meals, exchanging stories, enjoying common activities, and living side-by-side.

Respite Volunteers fill two 4-5 hour shifts a month, helping to relieve residential staff of their duties at the house. While on shift, volunteers are expected to engage with residents at the house in a variety of ways, including having conversation over coffee, playing a game, cooking a meal, or watching a movie together. Volunteers model and promote community principles of respect, compassion, and inclusion, ensuring that the house is a safe, welcoming space for community members. Before beginning solo shifts, volunteers attend a Companion Training and complete several shadow shifts with staff. Volunteers also participate in regular communications and debriefs with the residential staff team.

Since our program model is centered on fostering authentic relationships with individuals, the Respite Volunteer position requires at least a one year commitment.
