Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising activity. It is an overnight, team event where each community comes together for one day and one night to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers, to remember those we have lost, and to fight back against a disease that takes too much from too many. Teams of approximately 8-15 people commit to raising $100 each and take turns walking or running relay-style for 24 hours. We are currently seeking volunteer to help with the planning and implementation of our 2014 event in San Bruno.
Relay For Life of San Bruno needs Volunteers to Help with Publicity. Responsibilities include:
- · Retain and recruit committee volunteers to help with advocacy education and activation (i.e. create opportunities for participants to join the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)).
- · Collaborate with Chair to plan and set goals for advocacy education and activation.
- · Be an expert on the Society’s legislative priorities and ACS CAN materials/resources.
- · Cultivate relationships with volunteers and community members who have directly benefitted from the Society’s advocacy efforts, and identify those who are willing to share their stories in person, in writing, and/or with the media.
- · Leverage kick-offs, team meetings/rallies, fundraising workshops, bank nights, event days, and wrap-ups as opportunities to educate Relayers about the Society’s advocacy efforts/successes, legislative action alerts, and opportunities to join ACS CAN.
- · Collaborate with the Entertainment & Activities & Ceremonies Chair and the Mission Chair to plan a powerful 'Fight Back’ ceremony that includes advocacy education and activation.
- · Ensure that all other committee volunteers are considering advocacy education and activation in their plans.
- Ensure that all advocacy volunteers/contacts know how much they are appreciated.

Description
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. This is the signature event of the American Cancer Society and the largest community activity of its kind. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, field, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are 24-hour overnight events to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps.
