How can I truly help someone in emotional crisis? TIP's National Trainers will train you in the skills needed, no previous experience required. TIP volunteers are called within the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event by greater Portland area 1st responders and hospital staff to provide emotional and practical support to those in crisis 24/7 and 365 days a year. TIP Mission: Our volunteers will provide emotional first aid to survivors of tragedy in order to ease their immediate suffering and facilitate their healing and long term recovery.
Description
TIP of Greater Portland is a chapter of Trauma Intervention Programs, Inc. (TIP), a national non-profit organization founded in 1985. TIP has 14 affiliates serving over 250 cities across the nation. TIP of Greater Portland provides services to police, fire and hospital staff serving the following areas: Portland, South Portland, Westbrook and towns of Cumberland, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, Gorham, Scarborough and Windham. TIP also provides support to Maine Medical Center's trauma emergency department and the special care units for adults and pediatrics.
TIP Volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are called by police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and hospital personnel to assist family members and friends following a natural or unexpected death; victims of violent crime including rape, assault, robbery, or burglary; victims of fire; disoriented or lonely elderly persons; people involved in motor vehicle accidents; people who are distraught and seeking immediate support; and survivors of suicide.

- Must be at least 21
- Orientation or Training
- 8 classes over a 2 wk period. Workday evening classes & 2 full Sat. and one 1/2 day on Sun. After successful completion of training classes, then a commitment to attend our monthly continuing education meetings and do three 12 hr on call shifts.
- Must have reliable vehicle and live within 30 minutes max of Portland. You are not asked to sit at a station when on call, you can be in your home or out in local community.
