Texas Discovery Gardens

State Fair

State Fair Dates: September 24th - October 17th

Volunteer Shifts: Daily 9:45am - 2pm and 1:45pm - 6pm

Please email to see volunteer job descriptions and to ask any questions. For folks who have never volunteered with us, please go to our website to fill out the form and get started.

Tickets and Parking: You will receive a one-day admission ticket for the day you volunteer. This means you can visit the fair free either before or after your shift. Parking will also be free the day of your shift with a parking pass.

We have up to 25 volunteer slots daily. You can sign up for one shift or more. After four shifts you will earn extra tickets for the fair.

Volunteer positions are subject to change based on priorities/needs of the day, but we'll do our best to put you where you've signed up.

You will be required to come in the week before the fair (Sept 17-Sept 23) to pick up your tickets and parking passes, sign some paperwork, and do a quick orientation for the shifts. After you sign up and before you come for your orientation, you will receive an email with more logistical information about orientation specifics, entering Fair Park, and where to park. Without parking passes, you will not be able to enter Fair Park during the State Fair, so it is important that folks sign up before the fair and come to one of the orientation times the week before to receive those passes.

COVID-19 considerations: As of right now, masks are required for every person in the building over 2 years of age, regardless of vaccination status. Masks are also required for staff and volunteers outside if they are unable to maintain social distancing. We have hand sanitizer stations scattered throughout the building. These considerations will be updated based on CDC, local, and state guidelines as they happen.

Mission Statement

Texas Discovery Gardens is where children and adults discover and learn to sustain the natural world. Our vision is to provide a safe and natural oasis to our Dallas community. We want every visitor to leave with the knowledge and desire to emulate our sustainable practices at home!

Texas Discovery Gardens is a 501(c)(3) organization. Our 7.5 acre organic garden features native and adapted plants. Inside, our two-story Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium transports you to a tropical rainforest, complete with hundreds of free-flying tropical butterflies!

Located in Dallas' historic Fair Park, Texas Discovery Gardens is a year-round organically maintained urban oasis filled with natural wonders. Family festivals, workshops, free admission days, and our extensive (and growing) EarthKeepers(r) student education program introduce children and adults to natural outdoor learning experiences.

We are the first public garden in the state of Texas to be certified 100% organic by the Texas Organic Research Center. The gardens are maintained using sustainable methods that conserve water and help to protect the environment.
