MVFC seeks enthusiastic tutors to help elementary, middle and high school students with their homework. The center has been operating for over 35 years serving the surrounding low-income community, and our youth program is a unique mix of leadership training, team building and academic assistance.
Tutors will be directed by staff to help children/youth one-on-one and in small groups. Available hours range from 1.5 hrs/week to 12 hrs/week. Applicants will be required to fill out volunteer paperwork, attend an orientation and submit a current (3 yrs) TB test.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Mar Vista Family Center is to provide low-income families with quality early childhood education, youth enrichment, and educational tools to create positive change in their lives and their community. Every program adheres to the basic premise that it is critical to empower children, teens and adults to play vital and responsible roles - as decision-makers, community leaders, mentors, classroom volunteers, and fundraisers.
Description
Mar Vista Family Center was founded in 1977 as a preschool for low-income families that aimed to engage parents as partners in the education of their children.
It is located in a low-income, densely, populated area of Los Angeles, adjacent to the only federal housing project in West Los Angeles.
The local residents are affected by violence, poverty and lack of education. Each year nearly 1,000 children, teens and adults of predominantly Hispanic origin take advantage of MVFC's programs.
Mar Vista Family Center currently operates various projects within three main program areas: Early Childhood Education, Youth, and Community.
By Youth For Youth is a program for youth that provides positive role models and important leadership development for 75 underprivileged youths ranging in age from 13 and up.
