About

Children who do not do well in Kindergarten often do not read at grade level by third grade -- Children who are not reading at grade level by third grade often become a school dropout -- 30% of Oakland Youth do not graduate from high school.

Oakland Unified School District has special Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes in 20 of its elementary schools.

TK provides a year of developmentally appropriate early education, so that students begin traditional Kindergarten with the academic, social, physical, and emotional skills that they need for success through the rest of their educational careers.

How can you help?

Partner with Oakland Rotary and visit one of the TK Classrooms to support the children by encouraging them to succeed, reading to them, assist with their projects, and generally show that there are people who care about them.

All classroom visitors are required to have a background clearance
