Reading Legacies

Volunteers make everything we do possible, so THANK YOU for taking the time to learn more about Reading Legacies and the various ways you can make a lasting difference in the lives of young children!

We offer multiple volunteer opportunities in various communities through San Diego County! Below you will find a description of the programs and our volunteer positions. We are happy to answer your questions. Please visit our website for more information on each position.

First Teachers Program Ambassador
This special role is open to adult volunteers who are also firm believers in the Reading Legacies mission. The First Teachers program is designed to empower and encourage parents as their child’s first and most important teacher through fun read-aloud sessions and discussions to follow. As an ambassador you would help with set up, registration, and promotion during our Family Story Hour special events.

First Teachers Program Read-Aloud Facilitator
Has reading positively impacted your life? Are you comfortable with reading to a group of children? Do you admire the mission of Reading Legacies? Our goal is to communicate the value of reading aloud with children to our program participants, families, and community members. Reading Legacies hosts special read-aloud events at Liberty Station. By reading a story and sharing about the value of reading in your own life, your read-aloud will effectively communicate the unique mission of Reading Legacies. For this role, we’re looking to engage adult volunteers who are willing to encourage others to read with their children.

Storybook Legacies Program Facilitator Storybooks and grandparents-need we say more? Come and help us create a grandparent’s (or other important adult’s) read-aloud video at our Story Corner, public libraries and senior centers here in San Diego County. You’ll spend time coaching and videotaping local seniors as they read stories and share personal memories with the children who will be watching their video. Your time and efforts will allow these seniors to give what is sure to be a cherished gift to their grandchildren. You are helping us create "reading legacies" across San Diego County and beyond!

Youth Community Advocate: If you like children and smiling, this is the position for you! As a Youth Community Advocate, you will support a great group of Youth Readers (high school student volunteers) as they read aloud to underserved children right in their own communities. Your weekly commitment will be just about 2 hours (travel time included). Youth Community Advocate volunteers serve as role models for Youth Readers programs across San Diego County.

Book Selection Committee Member: Do you love to read? Do you have a background in children’s literature or education? Help us choose quality children’s books for inclusion in our themed monthly book list. You’ll spend a few hours each month enjoying, reviewing, and recommending children’s books from the comfort of your local library, book store, cafĂ©, or favorite chair!

Office Support Volunteer: Do you have some free time during the week? Looking for something you can do this week and not next? Then office support may be just the opportunity for you! We often have scanning, data entry, phone calls, and other office-related tasks that we would love your help with. Like spare change, a few hours here and there really adds up!

Mission Statement

The mission of Reading Legacies is to empower children and youth as VALUED family and community members through intergenerational read aloud experiences.

Description

The current challenges in families and society are causing not only a lack of educational support for our young people but perhaps more importantly, the emotional support of committed role models and family members giving of themselves through shared-reading time. It is our goal to re-institutionalize this activity throughout San Diego County. Our primary target is children and youth in at-risk situations, giving them opportunities to gain confidence and self-esteem through shared-reading experiences through our two programs, Youth Readers and Book Bridges programs. In our Youth Readers program, we target at-risk youth who may be unsupervised after school and are vulnerable to gangs and drugs. In our Book Bridges program, we serve children and youth who have incarcerated family members whose withdrawal from their lives causes confusion, guilt, and fears.
