Join a dynamic community-based organization offering innovative and high quality education programs to adult learners and their families in Mason County, WA. Learn, grow, and contribute! Sound Learning is a non-profit organization that promotes access to education through community-based small group tutoring and classes in Mason and Thurston Counties. Our progrmas include Basic Studies (GED Prep and High School 21+), and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Civics and employment-related topics are integrated into the curriculum. Sound Learning serves close to 200 adults and families each year, in partnership with 100 trained community volunteers.

Sound Learning staff and volunteers are committed to learner-centered education that begins with students' prior knowledge and experience, and addresses participants' priorities and goals.

About the position: The AmeriCorps member will assist in implementing high quality education programs serving adults in the areas of reading, writing, math, basic computers, and English language learning. Primary responsibilities include teaching, curriculum development, recruitment of volunteers and students, volunteer coordination, outreach, and required record keeping. The AmeriCorps member will also develop opportunities for students to connect with the larger community through informational workshops and community projects; participate in collecting and utilizing data to demonstrate community impact; and assist in organizing events, trainings, and celebrations.

Benefits include excellent training, a monthly service stipend of $1,307, health coverage, and a post-service education award of $5,920. This position is from Oct. 1, 2018 - Aug. 15, 2019.

Who should apply: We are looking for applicants who have at least a high school diploma/GED, are committed to making a difference in the community, and interested in improving lives through education. Other traits include: an interest/experience in literacy and education; strong communication, organizational and computer skills; the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; dedication to professional development and the mission/programs of the organization. Applicants must be able to thrive in a busy environment and demonstrate the ability to work with people of diverse cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. Applicants must be available four evenings a week and able to commute to Shelton, WA. *Spanish language skills are desirable but not required.

Description

Sound Learning provides instruction to adults to improve reading, writing, and math skills; study for a GED;participate in a diploma program; or study English for Speakers of Other Languages. Our low-cost services are provided in Mason and Thurston Counties.

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) helping community members build their self-sufficiency and contribute to their local community through work, family life and education, providing services for 281 adults in Mason and Thurston counties during the 2009-2010 program year with over 10,000 hours of instruction time, thanks to our 185 volunteers and many supporters.
