Therapy dogs provide presence and comfort for our patients and their families and are in high demand. They are present in our in-patient units (David Simpson Hospice House, Ames Family Hospice House and at our Medina facility) as well as being called to visit patients in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, in hospitals, in patient's own homes and on occasion--to be present at special events as well. They--along with their pet parents, are an extremely valuable part of our Volunteer team.
Pet parents must be caring and compassionate and be able to maintain patient and family confidentiality. 16 hours of Volunteer Education must be completed as well as TB test and criminal background check (paid for by agency).
Dog needs to hold a Pet Therapy certification from either Delta Society or Therapy Dogs International, be current on all shots and dog license. Dog also needs to have insurance. We can provide information on therapy dog trainers and testers and we also offer pet evaluations at various times at our headquarters location in Cleveland.
