Seagrave Fire Engine
Vintage Seagrave fire engine at Santa Ana Fire Museum

Are you a fire station or history buff? Love vintage fire engines and equipment? We are looking for volunteers to conduct tours of the Santa Ana Fire Department Museum at our Open Houses. Open Houses are normally scheduled every other month (odd numbered months) on the second Saturday, from noon to 4:00 pm. We also occasionally need docents (tour guides) for tours or events held on other days or times.

No experience is necessary and training is provided. This opportunity is perfect for all ages, from college students to retirees. Our museum operates out of an active-duty County Fire Station, includes vintage fire trucks, equipment and memorabilia, and may be of special interest to those with fire service background. (Due to the museum location please note that volunteers will be required to undergo a basic criminal background check.)

We are a friendly, informal group of people who love history! Please let us know more about your interests and background in your response. Our organization operates two museums, so please also see our listing for "Victorian House Museum Tour Guides" for additional opportunities. We look forward to meeting you.

Location:

120 Civic Center Dr. W, Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle House and Medical Museum, Fire Station #75, 120 W Walnut, Santa Ana, CA 92701, US

Mission Statement

We work to preserve and celebrate local history by creating living history programs for adults and children, supporting local efforts for historic preservation, maintaining photo and information archives of early local history, maintaining & preserving the Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle House and Medical Museum (the Victorian home of one of Orange County's first female physicians,) and maintaing the Santa Ana Fire Museum, housed in an active fire station.

Description

Our programs are varied. We operate two museums. Our Victorian house museum lets individuals and families experience life in the 1890s and learn about the life of a pioneering woman doctor. Our unique fire museum is housed in an active fire station, and showcases the history of local firefighters going back to the 1890s. We organize an annual historical cemetery tour with actors portraying noteworthy individuals of this area. We create publications to celebrate specific aspects of local history. We offer a website with extensive articles and vintage photos. We support local preservation projects and renovations.

We are one of the leading historical societies in Orange County. Our board are all active volunteers, creating all of the projects and programs that we do. We have won multiple awards for our publications, our cemetery tour, and other projects. Please visit our website to get a taste of many of our activities. We encourage memberships and financial donations to help fund our activities and historical documentation projects. We'll be happy to send out a newsletter upon request.
