Volunteers needed the 2019-20 school year! (September to June. )

Los Ayudantes is an award winning tutoring group helping Redwood City students to build literacy skills for life. We are currently accepting volunteers for the 2018-2019 school year to tutor 4th and 5th graders from 1:45 to 3:00 on Thursdays.

We serve students in an after-school Book Club at Fair Oaks Community School. New tutors receive an orientation and training materials, and sit in on a group until they feel comfortable leading a group of their own. Groups are comprised of 2-4 students and one adult. Discussion includes helping students summarize, make predictions, and describe characters, plot, and setting. Book Club meets together in one location.

Volunteers will work one hour a week with a small group of students (2-4), providing reading support, encouragement, and sharing a love of reading and learning. Tutors help students to understand what they're reading, build critical thinking skills, and engage in conversation that helps students integrate ideas into their own lives and experiences.
