Group opportunities usually are in the form of landscaping or clean-up work OUTSIDE the facility. This makes it possible for minimal training and accommodation of all ages. Opportunities vary by season and directly relate to what the BH&A needs are at the time. If you have a group interested in volunteering, please reach out right away!

In light of COVID-19 the Butterfly House & Aquarium REQUIRES all staff and volunteers to wear a face covering inside the facility during the duration of their shift. For the safety of our staff, volunteers, and guests, all guests are STRONGLY REQUESTED to wear a face covering upon entrance to the facility and during the entirety of their visit. Hand sanitizer and access to handwashing sinks is available.

Mission Statement

Inspiring conservation of the vital building blocks of sea, sky, and land

Description

The Butterfly House & Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are the only public saltwater aquarium in the Dakotas and one of only a few butterfly houses nationwide that are open year-round.

A home to thousands of species, coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse environments on the planet. They also serve as fish nurseries, providing protection, food and shelter for young scaly swimmers. The Aquarium Gallery at the Butterfly House & Aquarium displays hundreds of different species of fishes and corals in over 10,000 gallons of aquariums. From coral reefs and anemones, to seahorses and tangs, our saltwater exhibits are home to marine life from the Indo-Pacific region to the Caribbean.

Step into the jungle, where lush vegetation surrounds you and it’s always a balmy 80 degrees. Over 800 butterflies from every corner of the globe welcome you to their 3,600 square foot home in the Dakota’s largest insectarium. Enjoy the serenity and awe-inspiring beauty that is the Butterfly House on your local tropical getaway.

A fun atmosphere designed for exploration and learning is what you’ll find at the Discovery Den, where parents and children examine nature’s wonders through interactive exhibits, activities and educational displays.
