Volunteers transport guests to the tropical rainforest environment and ocean adventure. Volunteers provide educational information about butterflies, plants, and aquatic life. Volunteers ensure no butterflies leave with the guests.

Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the health and safety of the exhibit space for animals, guests, and staff, and they are the primary person for answering questions. Volunteers ensure no butterflies leave with guests (complying with USDA regulations), and they monitor all open exhibit areas such as the touch pools in the aquarium.

Those who are interested can fill out our online application at: https://butterflyhouseaquarium.org/volunteer-application

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to volunteer in the Butterfly House & Aquarium. Those under 18 years of age must have a parent complete and sign a consent form prior to their first assignment. Background screening may be required for some positions.

About Butterfly House & Aquarium

Location:

4320 S. Oxbow Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57106, US

Mission Statement

Inspiring conservation of the vital building blocks of sea, sky, and land

Description

The Butterfly House & Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are the only public saltwater aquarium in the Dakotas and one of only a few butterfly houses nationwide that are open year-round.

A home to thousands of species, coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse environments on the planet. They also serve as fish nurseries, providing protection, food and shelter for young scaly swimmers. The Aquarium Gallery at the Butterfly House & Aquarium displays hundreds of different species of fishes and corals in over 10,000 gallons of aquariums. From coral reefs and anemones, to seahorses and tangs, our saltwater exhibits are home to marine life from the Indo-Pacific region to the Caribbean.

Step into the jungle, where lush vegetation surrounds you and it’s always a balmy 80 degrees. Over 800 butterflies from every corner of the globe welcome you to their 3,600 square foot home in the Dakota’s largest insectarium. Enjoy the serenity and awe-inspiring beauty that is the Butterfly House on your local tropical getaway.

A fun atmosphere designed for exploration and learning is what you’ll find at the Discovery Den, where parents and children examine nature’s wonders through interactive exhibits, activities and educational displays.
