Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. The Camp Fire in Northern California -- one of three blazing across the state -- is the most destructive in state history. We want to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you find access to shelter. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know the most effective ways to contribute.
Cool Classics! is seeking efficient, well-organized individuals interested in bringing their professional skills to a nonprofit working to expand its unique programs. We were recently honored with a 2017 Youth Program Award, given by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, in cooperation with the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies. General Description:
Cool Classics! is an after-school program that uses book-based, arts-integrated curricula to improve literacy, teach critical-thinking skills and introduce students in underserved communities to the arts and humanities. Committed to improving literacy and being a vehicle for creating readers and critical thinkers, Cool Classics!’ goal is to expand participants’ sense of the arts, cultures and humanities by helping to engage each child as an avid reader, analytic thinker and thoughtful citizen. Since 2006 we have been introducing elementary school children to the world of ideas in ways that engage them. We hold our students to the highest academic standards and provide them with the tools for success.
Various measures indicate that the majority of children who participate in Cool Classics! achieve:
Increased enthusiasm for reading and improved reading skills
Better reading comprehension and analysis

Improved critical-thinking skills
Expanded understanding of: Literature, Humanities, Art, Dance, Drama, Music and Poetry
