Help Stop Housing Discrimination - become a PAID volunteer tester!

Prairie State Fair Housing Project is looking for volunteer testers to help investigate housing discrimination. Following training, testers meet with housing providers and record their experience in a report. Our staff then reviews and compares reports from various testers to determine if housing discrimination took place. We welcome persons with disabilities and people of all races, colors, ages, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.

Basic requirements:

  • Volunteer testers need to have
    • a state-issued ID
    • authorization to work in the United States
    • access to transportation
    • access to a computer
  • Volunteer testers cannot have
    • prior felony convictions or convictions of crimes involving fraud or perjury
    • an active real estate license

    • receive a stipend and travel reimbursement each time you help with a test

The mission of Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. is to provide or coordinate the delivery of high quality legal services to low-income individuals, families, and groups. The delivery of legal services will be directed to protecting the client's basic human needs including income, shelter, and physical safety; enhancing the client's independence and resolving related legal problems.

Description

Prairie State Legal Services is the only legal services program serving low income persons in the majority of northern and central Illinois, outside of Cook County. Our mission is to help our clients meet their basic human needs, such as housing, healthcare, basic income, and freedom from domestic violence.

Prairie State serves a combination of suburban, mid-size urban and rural counties from twelve offices located in Wheaton, St. Charles, Woodstock, Waukegan, Kankakee, Rockford, Rock Island, Ottawa, Peoria, Galesburg, Bloomington and Joliet. Over 100 employees and hundreds of volunteer private attorneys as well as corporate attorneys from the General Counsel’s offices of Caterpillar, State Farm Insurance, and Deere & Company help over 20,000 households each year.
