Securing employment is a crucial step to maintaining self-sufficiency. Join an amazing team of experienced LIHI Volunteers as we partner with LIHI residents to develop skills which will allow them to secure jobs, build their resume, write cover letters and prepare for interviews. Working with a resident once a week for 3 months, you’ll gain valuable experience in one-on-one settings while getting to know members of your own community. Through this program, you ensure our residents have access to resources and people to support them on their path to self-sufficiency.

Here is what a volunteer said about the program: "I love working with my students - they are so eager to learn. So far both of the residents I worked with acquired jobs during our collaboration. Volunteering with LIHI has been really meaningful - my help isn’t just giving back to the community, I am changing someone’s life." - Hope

Think you might be a good fit? Our program is still growing and we’d love to hear what you want to get out of this experience! Contact volunteer@LIHI.org or 206-957-8067 for more information and see how you can change someone’s life!

Logistics: Volunteers commit to approx. 2.5 hours per week for 3 months; 1.5 hours are spent working one-on-one in sessions with residents, 1 hour is spent each week planning, preparing and researching for the sessions. Location and time of meetings will vary depending on resident & volunteer availability. Volunteers should have good working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Open Office, navigating the internet, searching & applying for jobs, resume building, as well as good verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Experience working with low-income and/or formerly homeless adults is preferred. Background check required.

About Low Income Housing Institute

Location:

Mission Statement

The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.

Description

LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.

LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.

We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
