Children who grow up with books from an early age are more prepared for kindergarten and do better in school.

Please donate chubby board books for toddlers and children's picture books for preschool children!

Open Door Family Medical Centers' Reach Out and Read program brings literacy to our young patients right in our waiting areas. The goal of the program is to work with children from 6 months old to 5 years old to help them be comfortable and excited about books and help them be better prepared to enter kindergarten and for life. The program is gear towards children living in poverty who have less access to have books in their home.

Our reading volunteers help the children can select a book to take home each time they are at Open Door.

We are in continual need chubby board books for our young patients.

Please consider hosting a book drive to collect books four our youngest little patients. Contact Alicia Ward at award@odfmc.org. We have a 'How To' pamphlet if needed.

Our volunteer readers program uses gently used books to read aloud with the children and help the family select a books to take home to promote reading at home.

Our doctor's program uses new developmentally appropriate books during well visit from ages 6 months to 5 eyars old.

Our Reach Out and Read program is part of the National Reach Out and Read program.

Description

As a pioneer Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Open Door serves nearly 60,000 individual patients- with more than 40% of patients having no health insurance coverage. Primary care, dental care, behavioral health care, clinical nutrition, wellness programs and chronic disease management are the foundation of Open Door’s clinical programs. For nearly 50 years, Open Door has developed a proven model of cost-effective, preventive care for patients that benefits entire communities. Open Door currently operates health centers in Ossining, Port Chester, Sleepy Hollow, Mount Kisco, Brewster, Mamaroneck, as well as eight School-Based Health Centers in the Ossining and Port Chester school districts, and a comprehensive dental facility in Saugerties. Open Door is accredited by the Joint Commission, recognized by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Patient-Centered Medical Home, and recognized as the leading Health Disparities Reducer in NYS by the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA).
