Literacy Advance offers free English classes to adults in the Houston community and is always in need of volunteer tutors. The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is the largest of all Literacy Advance programs and assists non-English speaking adults to learn everyday English. The average ESL class is 5 - 6 people, grouped by language ability (not background language). All our classes are student-centered, and part of the free training we provide to our volunteer tutors demonstrates how to talk to students about their goals - enabling tutors to truly center the classes around the individuals in their group.
You DON'T need prior teaching experience, and you DON'T need a second language to be an ESL tutor! Literacy Advance provides all volunteer tutors with training, free of charge, and will assist you with ideas, advice and resources as you begin the exciting process of teaching another adult learn English. We ask all tutors of regular ESL classes to commit to 48 hours of tutoring, spread over 12 weeks (two classes a week for 2 hours each class) or 16 weeks (one class a week for 3 hours each class). If this time commitment is difficult or impossible, we have some more flexible opportunities available - please ask for more information!
