FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation is a nonprofit organization that provides creative arts therapy and recreation services for children and adults with cognitive, physical and/or emotional impairments.

We would like to expend an invitation to volunteers for Camp Sing Out, an inclusive theater camp for individuals with special needs. We're looking for great theater buddies ages 12 and up. Theater buddies may be paired one-to-one with a camper with special needs and accompany him/her in learning dialogue, songs, and choreography or assist with set/prop design, choreography rehearsal, stage crew, etc. This inclusive design fosters friendships, promotes understanding, and spotlights all abilities. On the last day of camp, we will host an adapted performance of "Peter Pan" with a cast party to follow.

Theater buddies will attend a brief orientation on Thursday, June 29th to provide information regarding the program and tips for working with campers with special needs. This camp is at no cost for theater buddies and approximately 35-40 volunteer hours may be awarded. Please provide your mailing address so we can send you a volunteer packet. I hope you join us!

Mission Statement

Enriching the lives of individuals with special needs, regardless of age, through the power of creative arts and recreational therapies.

Description

FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing a space for folks with special needs to enrich their lives. Founded in 1951, we work with clients of all ages, introducing them to new activities and experiences, helping them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and showing them new ways to communicate how they feel.

Through the dedication of our highly-trained staff and the support of partners and collaborating organizations throughout Metro Detroit, we offer music, art, dance/movement and recreational therapy for children and adults with a variety of special needs diagnoses. We go into schools in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties to provide music, art, dance/movement and recreational therapy for students receiving special education services. We work to expose our clients to new avenues of expression which serve to improve how they relate and interact with their environments and families.
