Position Overview:


Help enhance the library’s services to English language learners by facilitating an English Conversation Club at Seven Trees Branch Library. The goal of the ESL Conversation Club program is to create an opportunity to practice English conversation skills in a welcoming and respectful environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct or facilitate the English Conversation Club
  • Expand curriculum materials for the English Conversation Club
  • Increase the learner’s awareness of American culture
  • Share information about library services, programs and use of resources

Training/Support Available:

  • Orientation and ongoing support from Conversation Club Program Coordinators
  • Assistance from staff to initiate weekly class session
  • Training and support from staff about the library, programs & services
  • Library materials, data and technology
  • Occasional networking meetings with other club facilitators

Qualifications:

  • Experience in working or communicating with non-English-speaking students is highly desirable
  • Knowledge & experience in the field of English language learning or another teaching discipline
  • High degree of initiative and creativity
  • Excellent oral communication and written skills
  • Ability to organize projects and work
  • Good person-to-person skills

Commitment:

  • 6 to 12 month commitment
  • 1 hour (or more) class session(s) per week plus preparation time

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities' information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
