About Manatee Observation & Education Center

Location:

480 N. Indian River Drive, Fort Pierce, FL 34950, US

Mission Statement

OUR MISSION: The Manatee Center fosters curiosity and discovery of our unique coastal ecology, where people gather to learn, commune, and conserve the beauty and wild wonder of the Indian River Lagoon. OUR VISION: Creating water-keepers everywhere who passionately protect the natural waterways and marine habitats all living things depend on.

Description

The Manatee Center is an ideal place to learn more about the Treasure Coast's unique environment and its inhabitants, including the threatened Florida manatee.

Inside you'll find various aquariums featuring native species found in the Indian River Lagoon and interactive exhibits - all of which are enhanced by wonderful volunteers happy to share their knowledge with you. Outside, the wildlife observation tower provides visitors a bird's-eye-view of the Indian River Lagoon. We are situated at the mouth of Moore's Creek which is a popular spot to see visiting manatees during colder months.

There are 400-500 manatees living in our area year-round but, considering their backyard is 156 miles long and connected to a multitude of creeks and canals, it is never guaranteed that they will be visiting the Center at any given time.

The Manatee Center is supported by donations, memberships and the proceeds from its gift shop.
