ESL CC

Help enhance the library’s services to English language learners by facilitating an English Conversation Club at Hillview Branch Library.

The goal of the ESL Conversation Club program is to create an opportunity to practice English conversation skills in a welcoming, fun and respectful environment. The Club focuses on conversation over writing and/or reading, although these two facets may be incorporated based on participant requests. This is a great opportunity to meet some amazing members of our community and empower them to connect more with each other, library resources, and other support that they could use.

If you are over 18 years of age, you will need to be fingerprinted (at the library's expense).

Specialized training will be provided to new Facilitators. The Library also provides books, materials and games you can use in the Club and can make copies you want to use in class.

Skills and abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Good listener
  • Comfortable with getting to know you activities (such as icebreakers)

Commitment:

1-2 hours a week for a minimum of 3 months

Mission Statement

San Jose Public Library enriches lives by fostering lifelong learning and by ensuring that every member of the community has access to a vast array of ideas and information. San Jose Public Library is a winner of the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries. Recipients are selected because of their innovative approaches to public service and the contribution they make to the educational, civic, cultural and economic development goals of their communities.

Description

Hillview Branch Library is located in East San Jose, near the Story and King intersection. We are located right next door to Fischer Middle School and have a rambunctous, lively crew of students who frequent the library. We serve a diverse, vibrant community of all ages, many of whom are native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. Some of our popular activities include our storytimes, ESL Conversation Club, citizenship programs, and special holiday celebrations like our Halloween party and Posadas with Santa. We have a computer area for teens, children and adults and a mixed-age area; we also have 20 laptops that the public can check out and which we also use for programs. The library has two study rooms that the public can reserve and a beautiful community room with a projector and built-in sound system that is available to rent for free, open community activities. In addition, our library features a classroom space in our Family Learning Center and a separate office for virtual programs.

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities’ information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
