Computer Tutor
Make a Difference at the Hillview Library. Teach a someone how to sign up for email or youtube funny cat videos.

Share your computer prowess with our community!

Assist library customers with basic to advanced computer queries from creating an e-mail or filling out applications; saving, downlaoding and attaching files; searching the Internet and creating social media accounts, and using our pay-for-print services. Volunteers may also help customers troubleshoot e-readers, smart phones or tablets.

Requirements:

  • Ages 15 years and older
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, Internet, and email
  • 3 months commitment
  • Available at regularly scheduled times, for at least 2 hours a week
  • Willing to work with a variety of people
  • Fingerprint clearance required for volunteers 18 or over.

Description

Hillview Branch Library is located in East San Jose, near the Story and King intersection. We are located right next door to Fischer Middle School and have a rambunctous, lively crew of students who frequent the library. We serve a diverse, vibrant community of all ages, many of whom are native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. Some of our popular activities include our storytimes, ESL Conversation Club, citizenship programs, and special holiday celebrations like our Halloween party and Posadas with Santa. We have a computer area for teens, children and adults and a mixed-age area; we also have 20 laptops that the public can check out and which we also use for programs. The library has two study rooms that the public can reserve and a beautiful community room with a projector and built-in sound system that is available to rent for free, open community activities. In addition, our library features a classroom space in our Family Learning Center and a separate office for virtual programs.

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities’ information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
