Open Books is a nonprofit social venture that operates an extraordinary bookstore, provides community programs, and mobilizes passionate volunteers to promote literacy in Chicago and beyond.
The Open Books store is a donation-based wonderland of used (and some new!) books. All book sales support Open Books' literacy programs, which have served over 10,000 students to date. We are very excited to bring on a new team of bookstore volunteers at the end of March. We bring new store volunteers on only every four months, so now is the time to join! Bookstore volunteers help with all work that allows our store to thrive: providing the top-notch customer service we are proud to be known for, inventorying and shelving books, assisting with events, and more. Volunteers enjoy a fun work environment and join a lively team of 80 volunteers who support the bookstore each month!
Bookstore volunteers must commit to three shifts per month (10 hours) for a minimum of three consecutive months. Evening and weekend shifts are available. Attendance at an Open Books orientation and a bookstore orientation is required to get started.

Mission Statement
Open Books is a volunteer-based literacy organization and nonprofit bookstore dedicated to raising awareness about illiteracy and fostering a love of reading by people of all ages and skills.
Description
Open Books is Chicago's first nonprofit literacy bookstore and learning center: a two-storied dream where proceeds from the sale of 50,000+ used books on the fun, colorful, comfortable first floor will go to fund a spectrum of unique adult, family, and computer literacy programs upstairs. Volunteers work with literacy groups around the city to help students of all ages make literacy a fun and fundamental part of their lives.
