Plan, plant, prune, water, weed, harvest, educate, and eat. In less than one year, previous volunteers at Community in Action turned a former trash-burning site into a flourishing urban community garden. Learn (and teach) about tropical urban gardening, medicinal plants, nutrition, and conservation. The garden provides free organic fruits and vegetables for local residents and serves as a platform for education. Plus, we have one of the few urban gardens in the region!
Starting at $250.

Mission Statement
Community in Action empowers the impoverished of Rio de Janeiro through job training and education. Our technical and cultural coursework, personal development activities, primary and secondary school tutoring, educational seminars and partnerships with private and public entities seek to connect residents with academic and employment growth opportunities. We deliver the necessary skills and knowledge to our students and community partners that allow them to compete in the job market, expand their economic horizons, and make wiser and healthier decisions for themselves and their families.
Description
Community In Action is seeking people to empower women through arts and crafts, as well as other means. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to work with the local community and share each others strengths, build a sense of pride, and support growth through group connection and art.
Handicraft classes provide a positive social outlet and network for participants. Women are empowered to learn a new trade; their self-esteem is boosted; and they are instilled with a sense of community. Since 2005, Community in Action has been providing handicraft classes: sewing, sandal design, painting, perfumes, pottery, candles, and more. Currently we are partnering with other organizations in the community to extend our services. Classes may be held at our headquarters, a nearby community recreation center (where mothers often wait for hours while their children participate in activities), or at one of our partner schools. To partake in this program and teach a class, volunteers should have related background skills. Volunteers are responsible for providing supplies, developing lesson plans, and teaching the classes.
