Writing Coach in Action

Open Books is a nonprofit social venture that operates an extraordinary bookstore, provides community programs, and mobilizes passionate volunteers to promote literacy in Chicago and beyond. Open Books' Adventures in Creative Writing Field Trips are unforgettable experiences where 3rd-12th graders develop their writing skills in meaningful and creative ways. At our colorful literacy center, students write and read as a whole group, in small groups, and as individuals, working with our friendly and supportive writing coaches. They read sample work aloud, discuss it as a group, and write their own prose or poetry. No matter the topic, our students are always writing about their own lives, reflecting on their own experiences and discovering their own voices. After the two-hour workshop, students all visit the Open Books store to pick out a free book! Volunteer writing coaches are needed to support students through the entire field trip, from small group discussions to brainstorming to keeping them motivated through the writing process. Field trips take place at the Open Books literacy center in River North (one block north of the Chicago brown line stop) on most Tuesday-Friday mornings from 930am-12pm. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of any two field trips per month for at least three consecutive months, which makes for a nice and flexible schedule.
