We need a volunteer to teach a tai chi class for our elders in South Lake Union. Diabetes and hypertension are serious dangers, especially to low-income seniors. With your help, we can bring gentle, age appropriate exercise into their lives.
Responsibilities:
- Provide basic instruction in any tai chi form
- Commit to teaching a class once a week for at least 2 months
- Adapt to resident suggestions and need for accommodations
Skills and Requirements:
- Basic familiarity with tai chi (previous instruction experience preferred but not necessary)
- Experience working with older adults preferred
Our residents have specifically requested a tai chi class and are excited to having a fitness activity in the building. It is a great opportunity to gain experience working with seniors in a fun setting!

About Low Income Housing Institute
Location:

Mission Statement
The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.
Description
LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.
LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.
We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
