Open a World of Opportunities by being a Tutor

Siena Literacy Center provides support to adults in Detroit through volunteer tutors. We offer the opportunity to tutor learners in math, reading, writing, and English as a second language. Tutoring is possible in-person and virtually. Tutor training is provided.

Adult learners at Siena start with computer-based instruction and are then matched with a tutor based on the subject of instruction and the availability of both participants. Historically, one-on-one tutoring has taken place in-person, Monday through Thursday, between 10 am and 8 pm. However, the recent expansion to include remote tutoring allows learners and tutors the flexibility to work any time, any day of the week.

As tutors, we ask that you commit to two hours per week with your learner. We also ask that you commit to working with the learner for at least six months, ideally it would be at least a year. Learners and tutors establish strong relationships and the continuity of these relationships is extremely beneficial to both participants.

If you indicate your interest in tutoring at Siena, we will reach out to set up an initial meeting where we will learn about you and your interests, and will inform you about adult education at Siena. At this time you will be able to indicate which subjects you are interested in tutoring, as well as which days and times work best for you. We will use this information to match you with a learner. Multiple times throughout the year we will provide tutor training, soon to be available online as well as in person.

Here’s how you can make a difference at Siena!

In-person tutoring

Before the pandemic, tutoring at Siena consisted of face-to-face tutoring. We have opened back up for in-person tutoring for those who are comfortable, with social distancing. Everyone’s health is our first priority so we follow or exceed all of the current safety guidelines.

Remote tutoring

Since the pandemic, we have encouraged remote tutoring for those who are interested. Staff support learners and tutors in their use of technology such as Zoom and WhatsApp, as well as basic computer skills. In some cases, Siena is able to loan laptops and tablets. In addition, there is always the option to use the computer lab to participate in remote tutoring.

Drop-in tutoring

A recent addition to the tutoring repertoire at Siena is drop-in tutoring. Unlike one-on-one tutoring that expects a commitment of six months or more, participation in drop-in tutoring does not require a commitment. If interested, a tutor is able to indicate a block of time for a given week that they are willing to come and tutor a specific subject. For example, if a tutor has an open Thursday afternoon the upcoming week they may offer to be available to answer math questions from 2 - 4 pm. This provides greater flexibility to tutors who are not able to make long-term or consistent (i.e., the same day and time each week) commitments. It also provides another means of support to our learners.
